Learning from Traffic Accidents: Let’s Make Holiday Driving Accident-Free

Winter Driving

Three Things To Do To Avoid Traffic Accidents

The most important things to remember to keep holiday driving accident-free are…

1. FATIGUE is your biggest enemy.

More people drive fatigued and have poor driving performance than those who drive drunk. Fatigued driving can be just as deadly as drunk driving. Don’t do either!

Take frequent breaks — switch drivers often. Please plan your travel so that it isn’t exhausting.

2. DISTRACTIONS diminish your driving performance.

A recent study of auto accidents showed that the #1 antecedent to an accident was reaching for something moving in the car. The answer is to TRY to pay 100% attention to driving. This isn’t easy. But certainly, texting while driving and reading while driving are totally out of the question!

The video below graphically makes this point. Don’t watch if blood makes you squeamish.

Avoid electronics that steal your attention.

3. Watch the WEATHER.

Ice and Snow … Don’t Go! OK – I live in the south. But even experienced northern drivers should consider the risk of bad weather and choose not to travel in adverse conditions. You don’t want to be in a big pileup.
