Oxy-arc Underwater Cutting, Recommended Practice, IOGP
IOGP Report 471 addresses oxy-arc underwater cutting recommended practice.
Underwater oxy-arc cutting,* also commonly referred to as “burning” has been utilized extensively in the underwater diving environment. The frequency of diver fatalities, injuries, incidents, and asset damage occurring while using this process continues to be unacceptably high within the global diving industry. Divers engaged in burning need to be competent in the task. This Recommended Practice has been developed to assist with the management of this activity and provide control measures, guidance and processes to ensure the safe execution of this technique.
*Oxygen-arc cutting is when metal is cut by oxidising metal that is heated. The metal is then gas-blown — either by tubular steel electrodes or by electrodes that are exothermic. After ignited and the oxygen is flowing, these will continue to burn independently of the arc.
This Report is available to download from the IOGP Publications Library.
