You never know when you are going to hear a great idea or share a best practice at the TapRooT® Summit. I wanted to share a best practice and additional use for the Corrective Action Helper® Guide that stood out to me from the 2022 TapRooT® Summit in Knoxville, Tennessee.

The conversation came up over breakfast. Attendees were discussing commonly misunderstood root causes from the Root Cause Tree®. Often students may confuse some of the root causes the first time through the root cause tree. A common mistake is misunderstanding the difference between Enforcement Needs Improvement and Accountability Needs Improvement. Now the first thing new users should do when unsure is to read the questions and definitions in the TapRooT® Root Cause Tree® Dictionary. However, this doesn’t always settle arguments. So, what are teams to do when they are unsure or arguing on the backside of the Root Cause Tree®?

The best practice shared at the table was simple. Open up your Corrective Action Helper® Guide and see if the solutions proposed made sense for the root cause that was in dispute. Most often the reason people are arguing about root causes is that they don’t understand the issues that the category or root cause is trying to address. The Corrective Action Helper® Guide is a great support tool because it provides guidance for every basic cause category, near root cause category, and every root cause. If you take the time to read it you can gain a better understanding of the Root Cause Tree®.

The next morning, one of the guys at the table told me that he went back to his room that night and opened up the Corrective Action Helper Guide to look at some of the sections he had found confusing in the past. He couldn’t wait to get back to the office and share this simple practice for stopping debates on the Root Cause Tree®.
