The Deadliest Recorded Train Wreck

train wreck

The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami caused the deadliest recorded train wreck.

The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami caused the train wreck and loss of at least 1,700 lives on the “Queen of the Sea” train, while doing immense damage to the Sri Lanka railway infrastructure. The passengers who thought the train would shelter them piled on the train; many perished as the tsunami overpowered the train.

Casualties from this deadliest recorded train wreck were either drowned or crushed by heavy debris. Another 35,000 victims were killed on the ground in Sri Lanka.
